High And Dry @ 23rd Reel Music Fest

Jul 07, 2006 06:30PM

Well, we arrived in Portland, OR for the first official 2006 High And Dry screening at the 23rd Reel Music Fest. As we fly over all the rivers and bridges we were welcomed to some decent rain, wet pavement and cloudy cold weather on par for the area and time of year as one can imagine. On hand and a big help over the weekend goes to former Tucsonan and HND interviewee Miranda Musiker. It was nice to see a smiling/familiar face at the airport and she even escorted us to the screening after a pleasant dinner at the Doug Fir Lounge. BBQ chicken for me. She also helped us/Howe with a few pieces of gear for Giant Sand after party/show. Thanks M – you rock. Howe and I got some hang time at the DF bar before the evening began; amongst discussion on the film was live concert taping, Tucson, family, talk of vegetarian soup and potential for future film collaboration did eventually ensue. Could be interesting… maybe Howe could be the next Harry Dean Stanton… what do you think? I think I should cast Howe in an acting part in my next film! Anywho… Stayed at the Jupiter Hotel next to the Doug Fir and was treated to a nice danish modern style room, relatively cozy with some cable tv. The real highlight of the place is the Doug Fir Lounge/club of course. After dinner went downtown about a 5 min drive to the Guild Theater (sure wish that neon sign was working) right in the middle of downtown there on Taylor and 9th. There we were greated by our stellor festival programmer Mr. Bill Foster, and nice staff of folks, thanks for the Tazo Chai Tea. Arrived a little later than we like to a nice sized crowd and excellent art house theater with good sound, nice projection and big screen. Did a short intro and fun Q&A after. The response was great. After High And Dry, we headed back to the Doug Fir Lounge for the show- the Quags opened – unfortunately missed them – sorry Dennis – next time for sure. Next up was a blazingly experimental solo rock performance by UK’s and recent Giant Sand guest star Scout Niblett. Of course to top it off was an amazing set by the 4 suited Giant Sand gents. Encore highlight for me was NYC of Time. M. Ward was the very special surprise guest – sitting in on a few tunes. Least to say backstage at the Doug Fir was host to some Knobb Creek and Jack Daniels, which flowed pretty quickly, topped off with some Gin and Tonic. But that’s not all – cuz we wound up with some strange cable tv and burgers/fries room service til 4am back in Howe’s room. Rumour had it a Doo Rag/GS fan had flown in from Albequeque to see HND and the show. Amamzing. Saturday late am walk over to M&L for brunch. Then back downtown to the Guild for the 4pm matinee. Decent crowd – thanks to all who came out to both screenings. My first time showing anything in Portland let alone Oregon. Plus, this cut was different then the last 2 screenings, well we changed the ending – and heck someone who saw it in Tucson noticed it, so that was cool. Saturday night was dinner with DP/friend/former Tucsonan Anna Lee Keefer (Invisible World rocked my world, have you seen it?), he fella/painter Jack Olson and gal Lily for some Tex mex at Esparza’s. Followed by some jukebox and drinks at Cheers NW – got to visit my old pal/big sister Lori who I used to work for at Island Records/Polydor. Always a pleasure to see her. Met some good folks and friends of hers. Late night wouldn’t have been conplete without a stop at Voodoo Donuts. We kept hearing about this place – little hole in the wall – but man it got packed right after we arrived and damn the donuts were amazingly good – best I’ve had in ages. Sunday was brunch with Erik Merrill(fomer bassist of Pollo Elastico, Doris Daze), Meg and kids over in a cool neighborhood at a place called Eutopia. Great to re-connect with him as well as talk of future Pollo Elastico CD re-issue and Labor Day Tucson event. Well, it was all about movies, music, friends and eatin n drinkin – and that’s just the way I like it.
