Sheer non-narrative brilliance. I wish I made this film.

I caught your film at the Temecula Valley Fest and thought it was fantastic. My film Plainview played in the shorts program there also, but not in your block. I noticed we are both Very Short Movies finalists. Any chance you'll be coming out for that next March?

    Hi Nikyatu,

Although it's necessary to premiere at Sundance with a feature film, they are MUCH MORE lenient with shorts. They told me personally that they basically screen the shorts they like -- period. If a screening slot comes down to your film and another person's, then premiere statues might come into play.

That being said, I didn't premiere there, and neither did most of my classmates from Columbia University. Fellipe Barbosa (SALT KISS), Tze Chun (WINDOW BREAKER), Hope Dickson Leach (THE DAWN CHORUS), Ian Olds (BOMB), and Sophie Barthes (HAPPINESS) all premiered somewhere else.

Personally, for African-Amercian shorts, I think that the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is the best place to premiere. Their shorts program is one of their most popular events (i.e. attracts a huge enthusiastic audience), they only let in 5 films, they treat you like royalty, and all 5 shorts win at least $5,000. Not to mention that the grand prize is the $20,000 HBO SHORT FILM AWARD, one of the largest shorts prizes in the world.

They don't demand a premiere either, but your short film can't have won a prize at any other festival to be considered.

From now on, whenever I finish a short, I'm sending it to them first...again.

    Hey Doug,

I didn't actually make it to Memphis. No cash. But my film will screen at Sundance @ The BAM in Brooklyn -- of course at The Brooklyn Academy of Music -- on or around June 3rd.

Been hearing great things about your film. Even though my film has and will have a few screenings with yours, I think I'll miss it on the festival circuit. Any chance we could swap copies of our films or maybe I could catch a NY screening sometime? I wanted to chat with you at Memphis, but I guess I never caught up with you. Did you attend? I had a blast.
