Sans Vie Premier at the Seattle Art Museum May 24, 2007 04:50PM
The final cut was made this week and we are working on sound right now. Final running time 42 minutes and 30 seconds. The premier will be located in Seattle at SAM (seattle art museum) this will be a fun event for all invited. Yes it is invitation only and is mainly a chance for the cast, crew, friends family and some local press to get a look at it as it kicks off to seek acceptance on the festival circuit. A new poster and flyers are being made to represent the new release date by a pro. The last one was me and dammit I’m just to busy to update the poster. August 25th look for updates on screenings, reviews etc.
Sans Vie is now a feature Feb 09, 2007 09:00AM
After much deliberation I have decided to make Sans vie a feature. The current story focus’s mainly on Jolie and her inability to interact with anyone in society. Dixi Lee put on an amazing performance as Paige and at the end of the 37 minute short I don’t feel her story is told. The new footage will be shot this spring and summer of 2007 in 5 locations. A huge cast is being assembled for one of my most ambitious scenes so far. Glyniss Mitchell has signed on to play the part of Marissa Paige’s best friend. Talks are still happening for who will be playing the part of Serge, Paiges ex.

Kudos to our composer who just finished up Ghost Rider and is in Talks for Spiderman 3. He works as a synth programmer down in LA and is just a really great guy. I spoke with him a few years ago about creating a style together and always doing my projects with him. This was before he was signed on to Exorsism of Emily Rose. So we created a partnership and a bit of a friendship. We seem to work well together on my first two projects and wouldnt you know LA snatched him up. When I asked if he was still interested in Sans Vie he said "Do you even have to ask" As always I feel lucky to have not only met up with talented hard working people but good friends.
Sans Vie Week 3 Sep 28, 2006 08:52AM
Friday night I went to Goergetown with Mark, Stefan and Melissa. We did a couple of cutaway shots and then Mark and I headed down to Tacoma to set up lights with Joe. We ended up getting out of there around 10 and I went to bed at 12 after making sure I had everything figured out for the weekend. Saturday went smooth like butter. We had 23 shots and we were ahead of schedule so I slowed things down and actually spent some good time working a scene out with the actors. We have been so rushed it has been hard in spots to really spend time getting into the motivation and detail of human nature in the scenes. This is where I could have used more crew so I could spend more time with the cast. I do have to say that it was pretty amazing seeing people who really shouldn't be taking trash out just pitching in and doing it. Not saying they will do it but actually just doing it to help out without anyone asking. We were clearing out of Georgetown last weekend and Melissa had two huge bags of trash that I was trying to help her with and we had a little race to the dumpster. She didn't want me to help her because she had it. There were a lot of people like that on set. Bruce, Joe, Mark, Margaretta, on and on just a lot of people doing things not in their actual role. It really helped out a lot. I think in the indie world especially in Seattle the more we can help each other the better. That goes in many directions. Try to make call times that are reasonable. After a long weekend have an early wrap time on Sundays. People want to live the dream of your film but don't expect anyone to be as crazy as you with your test of endurance or you will burn friends out. Anyway I'm tired and probably just rambling So on with the weekendSaturday we ended up losing some of the Key light and still needed to get to the beach. We pulled a Pitch Black and Piled into our cars to race against the sun. The directions to the beach we had ended up taking us to a residential house. So we asked a local for directions to the beach and just grabbed some beautiful shots. That night was really not the end of the shoot but it was the end of shooting with Melissa and Dixi together. Driving away from Tacoma that night was like driving away from a girlfriend I just broke up with and would never see again. Sunday. This was probably the biggest effort for the shortest amount of film and I think the only person that really truly understood the worth of this shoot was Stefan. When we arrived 2 hours later at the location everyone understood why you cant get these shots anywhere in Seattle and get the same dramatic effect. After hiking and carrying rocking chairs around Mark and I pitched in and we all got Mexican food. I wanted a Margarita really really badly but opted for a coffee instead. So now I'm back and I have about 2 or 3 weeks to get Dennis and Josh rehearsed and we will shoot Dixi's beautiful poetry scene and be on our way to the wrap party.
Sans Vie week 2 Sep 27, 2006 03:59PM
Hello once again from the world of Sans Vie. It goes without saying that I am tired and dirty. No showers no comfortable bed dirty floors and waking up to sirens. I have been living on the set 4 days out of the week and although it has become exhausting on all levels, I savor every moment and interaction. The theatre of the actual production is just as rich and layered as the story we are painting. I have never really seen myself as a director. I'm more of a writer and really I'm more of a storyteller. Writers have a command of grammar and the English language, I believe it goes without saying this is something I lack. On this set though, I found myself beginning to see a small glimpse of directing and I enjoyed it. It wasn't directing the actors or the crew but directing the story. I have heard stories of Directors that bring big egos to the set and bend people to their will. This is not my style I genuinely just dig people and like working with them. On the second weekend the relationships that were beginning to grow really started having a good effect on the whole production.. Not that it was rocky or anything to begin with it just seemed like on the second weekend everyone was helping everyone out of human genuine care for everyone on the set and this was cool to be a part of. Bringing the love. The weekend Started with Friday. We shot a few scenes with Melissa and the night if my memory serves me correctly went fairly mellow and smoothly. Saturday I finally lost my footing and my mind. The scenes were simple enough but the coverage was what was complicated. We made it more complicated by trying to combine two master shots with a dolly shot that ended up being for the most part unusable and took more time then it saved but you know what you take gambles sometimes you win sometimes you lose. I shouldn't say the dolly shot is completely unusable but for what we will use it wasn't worth the effort. At any rate this put me in a bit of a tale spin that Rhiannon did her best to pull me out of schedule and shot wise. I also had a bit of an unexpected emotional moment on the porch rehearsing a scene. I didn't see it coming but I think I lost a bit of my cool and my bringing of the love. That and the lack of cloves put me in a visible bizarre state. The crew and cast came to the rescue and I ended up with cloves in my hand and surrounded by friends ready to role. I spent the rest of the day concerned more about keeping the shot list and coverage straight then anything else and by the end of the night my only answer for any question was I don't know. These are words I'm not afraid to say but on a set those are the last words I want to hear coming out of my mouth. On my part I had a hard day on the crew and cast side they shined. When I have a wrap time of 11 I like to keep it, When my answer to questions is I don't know then I have basically lost my footing and I'm not doing a good job. We made it to the dinner scene and I began to get back into my realm and there were some amazing performances by Dixi and Melissa. They both added their instinct to the story and made the scene just sing. After a late wrap I had a beer with Mark, Eric and Rhiannon and answered all questions with I don't know but I will by 4:30 AM lol. So Saturday night, Sunday morning Rhiannon and I stayed up until 4:30 in the morning reconstructing the day to figure a plan out so my answer would no longer be I don't know. Rhiannon was just amazing at her AD work on this she mind melded with me and we came up with a plan. That physical plan that was written down as a great plan for victory on Sunday. The plan vaporized into thin air somewhere around 1PM the next day I would guess. I was able to reconstruct it in about 5 minutes. Margaretta and Rhiannon took my insane illegible scribbles and deciphered them into English while I gave my mind a 5 minute breather. Mark shot a bedroom scene and I came back in to tackle the day. I would say after that loss of the shot list to reconstructing it and coming back in something happened. I was on top of the game for the rest of the night. It was like the opposite of Saturday where I was in some Alice in wonderland state, now I was in full command of the ship and we went forward with confidence and strength. We wrapped an hour later then planned but an hour earlier then the latest I wanted to go. We hung out on the porch and tried to distract Rocko from mounting everyone's leg. We had been working hard and it was time for a breather and a miniature wrap party since this location was wrapped out. Joe joined us for a beer and discussion on film school and a basic love fest over the last two weekends. There were some major issues with lacking in the production department. But overall I feel really happy with how things have been going. Its been tough but good. We have a lot of good people on this one and I feel extremely lucky. We did a hard wrap I moved the gear down to Tacoma, Staged Tacoma went home and collapsed. I'm still pretty tired but I just feel great about all the work that is happening. I feel really good about the relationships I'm making and I feel really exhausted but I'm loving every second of what I'm doing.Whether or not another story is coming is yet to be seen. We have two smaller weekends to finish, a lot of post and then we will see. All I know is this experience has been a treat on many levels.
Sans Vie Week 1 Sep 27, 2006 03:58PM
What a week. Things went very smoothly. Everyone really came through. Jason was able to find us not just a sound guy but someone with a great personality and some wonderful sound experience. Funny story, I met him and he said, Hi my name is Bruce Lee and I can't order pizza they wont deliver it. Very funny at least for me probably not for him and his desires for hot, tasty, home delivered pizza. So on with the weekend. I know I wont cover it all and I really need to get back into my production boards, shot lists etc, so a high overview. Eric, Stefan and Mark painted beautiful pictures. These guys are making me just feel really freaking lucky every second I'm around them. They all shine brighter then Eric's 2k. We had a lot of movement for these shots we had hall shots, stair shots, going in and out of room shots. We had our biggest props and yes we had dogs again! With everyones patience, communication and attention to detail we pulled it off. Jason was especially helpful keeping the production rolling and keeping things organized as I began to unravel out of producer mode and headed deeper into Director mode. Oh yes and Jason stepped in to work with Margaretta for the dead man scene. Man alive! Ok we all know Melissa and Dixi are amazing. I just have to take a moment and say Bravo to Benjamin Sharp. This guy had all kinds of crazy things going on over his face and right next to it. Plus he had a contact lens on his eyelash that Margaretta was pulling off with tweezers and he never. Blinked. Freaking amazing skill.Ok so There are many highlights left out. Time with Eric after the wrap, Stories told but not really told by Mark. Getting amazing performances from my friends who stepped in to be a part of the story, Bruce making sure he couldnt hear a mouse when we were above a Harley shop, Off a major road, Between two train tracks and one exit away from an airport. The Highlights go on and on really seeing Jolie and Paige come to life in Melissa and Dixi. Co-workers bringing not just food but a feast for the crew. Like Jolie's whispers at Paiges door. Somethings are better left as personal moments and not shared in blogs. Just basically a great weekend with brilliant performances by all. Except for Rocko he needed to be just a tad more slobberish and to breath louder.
