Shooting "I Can't Sleep"

I knew Lamec from the Upstate NY hip-hop scene, but never had the chance to work with him. When I heard the EP for his new album, it blew me away. Lamec was successful in creating a new sound, mixing "jungle" break beats with rap verse. Lamec, is a truthful person and his emotionally charged verses pull the audience in, he's not afraid to open up and tell it like it is. I found this refreshing in an age where machismo and arrogance dominate the airwaves.. Lamec didn't want a typical hip-hop video for this new sound that we began calling "Dark-Hop" or "Street-Hop", and I was excited to create a video that would represent the confusion, angst, and isolation that is represented in the song.
Also, this was my first video that used a good deal of CGI effects. I have to thank Nick Rios for all his help with that. This is the first video that we produced together under the shared name "Novakaine".
Factoids: The video was shot over the course of 2 days. During the subway sequence, we had to hide our cameras until everyone was in place, then shoot as many takes as possible before people caught on. There are both placed actors and real people in that sequence. Lamec had to use a tiny MP3 player as a playback device. The body-cam device was built by hand using aluminum poles and counter-weights.

Short and sweet, yet has a beginning, middle and end. If this is the precursor to a feature, I can hardly wait. Creative use of camera, much more "cinematic" than most digital films of today. Sound design also plays a big role in the suspense.
