High Definition vs. Film:
Believe me, if I could afford to shoot 35mm film I would but I must admit shooting HD and the results have convinced me to rethink my opinion. I shot "The King of Siam" on a Sony F900 camera. I shot ten (10) 40 minute tapes on a four day shoot. The weather was overcast and raining to beatuiful sunny weather. I shot inside with sun blasting through a kitchen window and in a FX smoke filled bar with multiple TV monitors. The 40 minute tapes cost me $89 each for a total cost of $890 dollars. If it was 35mm film stock at $1000 per 10 minutes the total cost would have been 40 cans of Kodak x $1000 per can = $40,000 dollars!
I was able to take my HD tapes to my post house who downloaded them on a portable hard drive to give to my editor who then dumped into into his Avid. If it was film the cost to develop to an answer print to be transfered to B-tapes would have cost me probably $5,200 dollars.
Once we had our rough cut we dumped it back onto the portable hard drive and the post house transferred the EDL List and rough cut onto their drive. We did our online fine cut and dub B-tape for post sound. Cost was approximately $2,500.
Once we finish our post-sound and married it back to the HD master along with music I had a completed project fo about $10,000 dollars.
I then had Deluxe quote me a price for $13,500 dollars to transfer my HD Master into a 35mm print. Final cost to shoot a 22 minute short film on 35mm film that looks GREAT IS $ 26,890 dollars.
If I had shot everything on 35mm film the cost would have been close to $70,000 dollars.
Correct me if I'm wrong, am I doing the math right?
