Film Maker's Blog

This is just a short list of some of my favorite films in no particular order: Feb 13, 2007 12:09PM
* Im Juli (In July ~ USA title) * Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (Straight from the Heart ~ USA title) * Yi Yi (A One and A Two) * Lucia and Sex (Sex and Lucia) * Amores Perros * Katakuri-ke no kofuku (Happiness of the Katakuris) * Hable con ella (Talk to Her) * Amelie * Hedwig and the Angry Inch * The Last Seduction * Swimming with Sharks * Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall, … Spring * Mysterious Skin * Kontroll * Kopps * The Full Monty * Memento * Clockwork Orange * Shrek 2 * Lord of the Rings (Trilogy) * Kiss Kiss Bang Bang * Bian Lian (The King of Masks) * Big Eden * Life is Beautiful * Central Station * Spirited Away * Mulholland Drive * Y Tu Mama Tambien * Moulin Rouge * Otesánek (Little Otik) * Aberdeen * Cold Comfort Farm * The Usual Suspects * Suicide Kings * Pulp Fiction * Fargo * Secrets and Lies * Like Water for Chocolate * Being John Malkovich * Grosse Point Blank * Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon * Requiem for a Dream * Kolya * Love Letter (1995) Directed by Shunji Iwai * Ja zuster, nee zuster (Yes Nurse, No Nurse) *** 2006 Oscar talk*** * good night, and good luck! (this should have won the Oscar for best film, and definitely should have won the Oscar for cinematography. It was beautifully shot, and made smoking look so good! * Capote (Hoffman was the film!) * Crash (great ensemble cast) * Murderball (personally, this film was much better than March of the Penguins and should have won the Doc. Oscar, but let's face it ~ nature and cute penguins vs USA paraplegic wheelchair rugby!) * Brokeback Mountain was very good but I felt it was going to win for the wrong reasons. Personally, I liked Ang Lee’s other film last year, Pride and Prejudice, better. My favorite scene in Brokeback is when Jake is separating the herds. He is dragging one of the sheep across the field by her hind legs. She starts out struggling while he is dragging her, and then suddenly crosses her front legs (in a submissive posture). You really have to congratulate the wrangler on that one. I can not begin to imagine how difficult it is to train a sheep to do that! (lol)

Kim Ann:

Yes, this site is addicting. What a great group of people and talent galore! Only two films that I watched this year that stand out and they are not new ones - Second Best and American Movie. American Movie has to hit home to some degree with all us film makers. It's a documetary about a guy who makes what turns out to be a horrible movie but he is so devoted to it that you gotta feel for and like him. I certainly felt his pain but laughed out loud at the really great humor. It was made in 99.

Best,

George

too busy for bundling, although I did watch part of the Hulk...amazing transition sequences...if you haven't read it yet, Bellwether by Connie Willis is not only one of the best books ever, but full of the recalcitrance of sheep.

Yes, the punch bowl fountain is the best $10 special effect ever. We're working on getting LPM (lfl) up on YouTube. Updating the website is one of my struggles with working with a group of people...great for creative collaboration and brainstorming, bad for detail work like websites. Thanks for the list suggestion; I will mull over this year's movies and see what I come up with for favorites. There's a bunch I've wanted to see and haven't yet --- "Prairie Home Companion" for one;; I love Altman's work -- I'm hoping to get snowed in later in February with a stack of DVD's.

Howdy....Happiness of the Katakuris is an amazingly weird and wonderful film. My Ang Lee favorite is "The Wedding Banquet."
