Digital Video Cameras
May 26, 2006 07:11PM
Ok... I've been looking into getting a sweet video camera sometime soon and these are some of the ones that I'm looking at:
Canon XL1 or XL2
Canon GL1 or GL2
Sony VX1000 or VX2000
Now, obviously the more expensive cameras are most likely going to be better, but I'm curious as to what you all have used and liked over the years. What would you recommend to a guy like me who wants something decent without going into eternal debt?

I have just found some cool instructional videos on how to make videos. They are very basic tips, but well made and fun to watch. Hey, you might even learn something! Check them out at http://www.izzyvideo.com/ (there are about 30 episodes so far)

I have just figured something out.
You can't be a serious filmmaker without a semi-wierd, low-lit, artsy picture of yourself on your blog.
I guess I'm not a serious filmmaker.

The end of the beginning

To all the frenzied masses who have been pulling hair and losing sleep over a name for my new movie, I have a regretful word. "The position has been filled." Thanks to the botanical zeal of Mr. Tube and his profound grasp of the heart of my film (even though I had only written down the first half of the plot) I have encountered fate in its truest form. "Fear of Man." ...and so it shall be.
New News
May 20, 2006 07:40PM
Hey there fans. Here's the scoop. I'm starting to get carried away in the spirit of movie making. Not only is "Paranoia" on the fast track to fame and glory, but I've got ANOTHER project in the old thinker. What is it's name? At this point, it has no name, and for this reason I will be holding an exclusive poll here on this blog.
YOU YOURSELVES WILL HAVE THE UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO MY UPCOMING MOVIE.
Here's what you do. Read the description below, and then post a possible name below. IF (and only if) your name strikes my fancy, I will name the movie in your honor AND put your name in the end credits. WOOOHHOOOO!!!!!
The movie opens with a surreal sequence of shots filmed in a snowy wood. We see a man running through the snow in slow motion. The way the camera cuts, it almost looks as if he is performing an elaborate dance. Slowely, the audience comes to the realization that he is being followed by a gunman. In the culminating shot of the sequence, the man is shot from behind and falls to the ground dead. (Afterwards, we learn that this was witnessed by a girl walking through the woods)
The next sequence is centered around a girl who has just witnessed the murder. Although she wants to telephone the authorities, she is consumed with fear for her life. She has received an anonymous letter from the killer, saying that if she contacts the police she will die. Torn between her fears and emotions, she is startled into reality by the apperance of the killer walking down the street toward her home. She freezes. He walks past the window where she sits and to the door. The girl hears the doorbell, but makes no move. Suddenly, the killers head appears in the window right beside her. The girl screams and and runs from the window. Seconds later, she recieves a phone call from the police telling her that an escaped convict was recently sighted prowling around her house and asking her if she needed any assistance. Looking down at the letter that she recieved from him, she says no and hangs up.
As the movie progresses, two major characters begin to pop up all around the girl. One is the man that she observed shoot the man who was running through the woods. The other character is the policeman who continues to contact her by phone. The major action of the movie is focused on the girl's...

Soooo... you guys are probably wondering, "What cool movie is this gator-boy character going to come up with next?" As it turns out, this is a very appropriate question. Answer: "Paranoia".
Paranoia is a short film, soon to be made by myself and a select bunch of aspiring young filmmakers. The story is that of a boy who, unknowingly, is subject to the horrors of his own imagination until reaching the breaking point. Although essentially an experimentation of original film technique and purpose, this project has already opened me up to a whole new perspective of the mind itself.
I must say that this will be my first ever stab at a psychological drama thriller, and I am already more intrigued by the genre than ever before. The next few days of filming promise to be most fulfilling.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE...

Come check out the trailor for my new film. Tell me what you think.

As far as cameras, a lot of college filmmakers like the Panasonic DVX. It has most of the features of the XL2 that we like and a really nice picture and is cheaper.

Gator -Boy,
Hope you enjoy Heaven's Gate. Have you seen Razor's Edge (the original with Tyrone Power). Super movie....black and white. And, of course, I'm a total fan of all Tarkovsky movies. He's dead now but did 7 films....all Russian. his is the original Solaris....also Andrei Rublev and my personal favorite-- Stalker. Stalker is particularly terrific as it is a pre-Chernobyl look at a nuclear disaster site in Russia. Very mystical. One of the scenes from our movie, Buffalo Hearts, is a "tip of the hat" to a great scene in this film. So, these are a few of my favorites. There are so many great ones.

I noticed that you don't have the panasonic 24P on your list. I have used both the panasonic 24p and the canon xl2. I prefer the panasonic 24p. I was trained in a course on the XL2 and theorectically it is supposed to be superior and blah, blah, blah. But the truth is I loved the images of the 24p a lot better and so do other film makers that I know. I'm not sure why this is but it just happens to be. There is a focus issue that we seem to have with the Xl2. Then the colors are somewhat not as fresh as the panasonic 24p. Nut if you ask me I would say try the 24p and the xl2. Compare the actual shoots and then decide.

Ooh, also, I'm kind of new to this "online filmmaking community" thing. Is posting my movie a very ethical thing to do?
May 25, 2006 12:57PM
I posted it on www.youtube.com and it gave me the code for embedding it within the page, if that's what you're talking about.

Hey Gator-Boy,
Yes, I do plan to pursue film as a career. The Master goal is to make it into UCLA, USC, or NYU; arguably the 3 best colleges for filmmaking. So, I've been keeping my grades up and trying to maintain a high GPA.

Hello Gator-boy,
Just to be controversial I would like to title your next film "Fear of Man". Try to push the creative walk through the snow/dancing. You have some beautiful symbolism at play. Could there also be a tragic twist in the plot when the young girl opens the door to find that the killer is actually her mother?

gator-boy,
Sounds like you're off and running to good start. I look forward to watching you're projects when they're ready.
Thanks for your comments on my blog. I'd be happy to share some more information with you about my production studio in a more private forum. Please just drop me an e-mail through my other website at the link below.

Thanks for watching my movie, Gator-Boy; and thanks especially for thinking highly of it. Good luck with Paranoia, I look forward to seeing it.
May 20, 2006 03:21AM
Paranoia sounds like an excellent project. I believe we are all paranoid at certain times especially us film makers. Sometimes we want the whole world to watch us yet we don't want anyone to see what we do. As one thespian once said "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean nobody's watching me".
I love psychological dramas. I'll be interested in following the progress of your film and seeing it when it comes out. Keep me on your list.
