Film Production Blog "TheGiving"
The Beginning

This film is my thesis project for a Master of Fine Arts in Media Arts at the University of Montana. Last summer I worked really hard beginning what I thought would be my thesis project, but things changed. Near the end of July, our family drove down to Los Angeles to visit my son's birthmother. She didn't want to meet us when Jason was born, but since then, had changed her mind and asked us to visit. It was a wonderful experience. At one point, I remember standing there watching her holding Jason, and Jason snuggled into her neck. Her chin started to quiver and tears fell down her face. Of course, I started crying too, and I was thinking, "I can never repay her for the gift that she has given our family." When I got back I felt the need to do something in some small way to repay her. My thesis chair, Rick Hughes, encouraged me to focus totally on this documentary. I was scared because I hadn't the first clue as to how to do a documentary. One of my professors, Sean O'Brien, gave me some great documentaries to watch, and I felt a kinship to Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky when I watched "Brother's Keeper". I learned a great deal from their work. So, here it is, my very first documentary...
