Why Maxtor Hard Drives suck.
Jan 22, 2007 04:26PM
I just got back from Leeds and found that my 250Gb Maxtor One Touch Firewire External Hard drive has lost all my media. This is the third model that has screwed up in the past two years and Maxtor have always provided hard drive replacements that have never lasted a full year.
Unfortunately the drive isn't in warranty now and all I can do is to advise everyone to stay away from all Maxtor external drives. Their internal hard drives are still quite good but the externals should be avoided upon pain of expensive data recovery services.
Best to throw them at young rapscalions who use your garden as a urinal late on a friday night. I hear the average human cerebral matter has better chance of data recovery than a Maxtor. I'm sticking with Lacie for now one.
P.S.
When I reccomend Lacie drives, it doesn't cover the Porsche models which are also terrible. I've had these one's replaced a number of times (again, three times) during a 12 month period and the latest one has a habit of causing files to go from 350Mb to 0Mb without you actually deleting anything. They are cheap but just as bad as the Maxtor (though Lacie have better customer support). Best to use as a doorstop or to give to small children to smash with a hard Lego hammer.

Books to watch out for.
Jan 20, 2007 03:24PM
Gordon Dahlquist, a Kubrickophile and writer has just had his first book published in the UK. I know Gordon from the good old days of alt.movies.kubrick and we met when I visited New York in 2003. He's a heck of a good guy and I was surprised to find Giles Foden's (The Last King of Scotland) positive review of his first novel, "The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters". Read it and order a copy from the Guardian bookshop at:
http://books.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,1993753,00.html
I also got an email from my lawyer, Tony Morris, who has also published his first novel, "The Musician and Maria Salcoiati" through Lindfield Press. The blurb at the back promises a romance set in two time periods, the early sixteenth and intercut with the late twentieth century. You can order a copy at:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Musician-Maria-Salcoiati-Anthony-Morris/dp/0955435102/sr=8-1/qid=1169335294/ref=pd_ka_1/026-9632528-3242009?ie=UTF8&s=books
Incidentally I noticed that Festivalking has cut and paste his request asking for my film to be submitted to his festival. Well I would consider it but I keep seeing the exact same message on every other Withoutabox Blog user.

British Council Uzbekistan - Film ON Scheme
Jan 18, 2007 04:22PM
Sometimes I get asked to go on some crazy adventures and whilst reading up on Central Asia, I recieved an invitation from the British Council to go and mentor young filmmakers in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.
I jumped at the chance and worked with some truly talented filmmakers and the local British Council staff. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life and I made a lot of good friends. Before I left, I cut a short one minute trailer showing a sample of each of the films produced.

Godfather III - The Unknown Screenplay
Jan 18, 2007 04:05AM
This is a rare find. In 1979, Paramount wanted to make a third Godfather film. Coppola wouldn't have anything to do with it so Paramount hired veteran writer Dean Reisner to write a draft. This has now found its way to the net at:
http://www.awesomefilm.com/script/Godfather_PartIII(3-12-79).pdf
Reisner was an established TV/Film Writer who worked on films such as Dirty Harry and script doctoring various projects up until his death in 2002. The script is based on a story by Mario Puzo who, apart from the story credit, had nothing to do with this version of the script.
Incidentally, it is well known that Coppola's version of Godfather Part III was hastily re-written when Robert Duvall refused to re-play the role of family retainer Tom Hagen. The earlier draft of this script (which Paul Schrader claimed had the inevitible Michael Corleone - Tom Hagen confrontation) can be found at:

First ever film that I directed - BOXED IN
Jan 18, 2007 02:24AM
Well actually co-directed. This was a short film I wrote and worked on with my friend, Jerome Le Peltier for Leeds University student television. This is after my first proper foray into filmmaking with Channel 4 which had Betacam camera's, wide angle handheld Hi-8 (remember those) and all cut together on a Lightworks.
Now I had to work on a SVHS camera and use a linear tape to tape editing suite. A very large step back but given a budget of absolutely zero, it was worth it. I scripted the entire thing before Phone Booth had even been thought of and while shooting, I was accused of ripping off the Johnny Depp movie, Nick of Time (which hadn't got a release anywhere yet). I should really have buried this film but since I still keep in touch with a lot of people who helped me on this, I thought I better post this on the net. Remember, I was only 20 when I made this so cut me some slack.

My first ever film - Movin As A Massive.
Jan 18, 2007 02:03AM
This is the first ever film I ever got commissioned as part of Channel 4/Lloyds Bank Film Challenge. It was a bit of a painful experience but it got made, broadcast and won a few awards.
The only copy I had of it is a VHS and so when I tried to get a Beta SP it appeared the production company, Channel 4 and the director were unable to help. Rather then have my VHS copy decay into oblivion, I thought I'd preserve my copy onto the web. Enjoy.

Well I can post movies here?
Jan 18, 2007 02:00AM
I just discovered I can post movies from YouTube on this site and just did it with my short film Lifters. Well, I thought I might as well do some other movies too. Here's a pop promo I edited for Moses Muwanga for a short lived indie band.
