Great Review - Denver Westword
Jul 10, 2006 06:43PM
"In this beautifully acted, carefully observed drama set in a transitional, multi-ethnic section of Austin, Texas, writer-director Mari Marchbanks - an Austin resident herself - examines the dangerous social collisions between the disturbed, drug-addled teenage daughter (Kira Pozehi) of a down-at-the-heels restaurant owner, the sweet-tempered Georgian immigrant (Gabriel Luna) who has a crush on her, and a cabal of drug dealers led by the girl's nasty Uncle Auggie (Bill Johnson). The screenplay tends toward melodrama, and its many narrative threads sometimes tangle. But when the moonstruck boy's good-hearted parents (Bhagrit Crow and Julia Polozova) take on the problems of their traumatized neighborhood, Marchbank's visions of personal and communal redemption begin to make perfect sense. Pozehi's magnetism is extraordinary, the Austin-tinged soundtrack hits just the right highs and lows, and Jay P. Lipa's evocative camerawork signals a bright future behind the Panaflex. This modestly produced feature represents all that's good and right in the indie-film movement." - Bill Gallo, Denver Westword

"Fall to Grace" offers further proof that excellent films can be made on a shoestring." - Seattle Post Intelligencer
"Marchbanks captures a hopeful perspective on the immigrant experience that consistently rings true."- The Seattle Times
"Thanks to top-notch performances from the entire cast (the luminous Pozehl turns in a knockout performance in every sense of the word) and some of the best cinematography Austin's ever produced (courtesy of Jay P. Lipa), this is one sleeper that leaves you anything but drowsy."- The Austin Chronicle

"Marchbanks captures the essence of a melting pot neighborhood where economics, not race, is the dividing factor. Without artifice or contrivance, she shows the daily battles fought by poor immigrants as they try to maintain their honesty and dignity." - Seattle Post Intelligencer
"This is an indie film in the genuine spirit of the word (not some studio-subsidized boutique product), showing compassion while following its own course of low-key redemption." - The Seattle Times
"Marchbanks' film is about the bonds that exist in small neighborhoods, where territoriality isn't necessarily a bad word (think Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing minus the racial showboating) and people's lives are unconsciously connected."- The Austin Chronicle

I'd rate "Fall to Grace" with 5 stars if I knew how (this is my first visit to this site).
The acting, direction, scene layouts were exactly right.
