Film Maker's Blog

Merry Christmas!

Dec 24, 2007 02:55PM

Merry Christmas! I'm very excited about the new year. I'm directing at least two shorts on 16mm film and this time next year I will be a graduate of the FSU Film School.

Summertime Movies

May 08, 2007 11:12AM

Well, I've moved into my first apartment. I'm extremely excited. Having my own kitchen is making me very happy. I'm scheduled to work on 6 short films this summer. And, I will picture lock on my documentary in about two weeks. The film I'm most excited to work on is set in a distopian society sometime in the near future. I'm art director and I will be helping the production designer make new cars look old and creating sets and props that make the film look believable. Soon, I will upload still frames and behind the scenes video from my F2. And, I will have a new website and a demo reel up.

Who else will be at Full Frame?

Mar 31, 2007 08:34PM

I'm just curious.

First Movie on Film and my Documentary

Mar 28, 2007 08:19AM

I directed my first movie on film last week. I'm really excited about getting my dailies back. We were only given 200 ft of film and four hours.

The week before I DPed for the first time. Foot-candles are starting to make a lot of sense to me.

I'm almost done with shooting my documentary. I have to conduct four interviews this Thursday. After that it will just be a matter of filling in the gaps.

It is up

Mar 07, 2007 10:13PM

My new website it up. It is far from done and there are some glitches that I haven't fixed yet. Some of them I don't know how to fix. I'm getting better at code, but I'm still very far from being able to make a professional website. I just have to keep at it!

Website

Mar 06, 2007 10:36PM

I'm redoing my website right now. I decided to update it with some new pictures and a new layout. Hopefully, I will have a page for each of my new films soon. I really need to make a demo reel too.

I just finished the second draft of my F2 script. I'm still not happy with it. Hopefully, I can make it better over the next few days.

My film school documentary is going to be a behind the scenes of a MFA thesis project. These are huge productions for short films.

New Script

Mar 02, 2007 08:35PM

I just started writing a new script for my F2. It has to be two pages or less and I have to be able to shoot it with 200 ft of film in four hours. I have a crew of ten people, two stand-ins, and two actors. I hope this turns out well! I shoot in three weeks! I will post pictures afterward!

Tonight, I took the kids who interviewed at the FSU Film School on a tour. I was kind of disappointed that they were all boys. One of the great things about my class is that there are other girls who are as serious about filmmaking as I am. Growing up, I felt that making films was a "boys thing" and that I was just an oddity. Most of the girls wanted to be actresses or singers. I suppose it just makes me happy when I see other women making films. A girl like me can have a voice too. The beauty of film is that who you are doesn't matter. The important part is the story you tell.

Two more days to vote on my movie

Feb 26, 2007 03:29PM

I have two days before voting ends on the PSA that I made.

Take a look and vote if you have time!

http://recycling.nsacwebcasts.com/

In other news, I'm finishing up editing on another PSA type movie. It's about 2 minutes long and its about how an individual can reduce their global footprint. I have to submit a shorter version of the movie than I want to, but it's okay.

I'm also starting preproduction for my film school documentary and for my F2. It looks like my documentary is going to be about one of the MFA thesis projects being filmed this semester.

I just started writing down a couple script ideas for my F2 project. We have to write a 2 page script and we're given a crew of 10 people, two actors, two stand ins, four hours, and 200 ft of film. This will definitely be interesting. Last week, I worked as 1st AD and this week I'm working as an Art Director and 2nd AD. I get to direct in about three weeks.

Vote on my Movie

Feb 13, 2007 02:09PM

I made a movie for a video contest about recycling paper. Go to this link to watch it.

Mine is "A Green Guardian" by Carrie Hunter

I'd like to know what you think! And make sure to vote on it too!

Independent Filmmakers League

Feb 09, 2007 11:43AM

My latest project is to restart FSU's Independent Filmmakers League. Every year the IFL has a student film festival at the school movie theater. Last year, the guys who ran it graduated and since then no one registered the club for this year or tried to start another student festival. I found some other people who want to restart it and I found copies of all of the paperwork and the old constitution. Hopefully, by next week it will once again be a registered student organization!

"You Suck"

Jan 25, 2007 07:16PM

In December, I finished my first film school movie. My movie, "You Suck," is about a guy who gets into a fight with a vending machine.

F1s (the schools name for your first real movie) are shot on XL1s. We had a boom mic and a small lighting package. We were only give a week of preproduction and we still had to attend classes.

I feel like the paperwork (location agreements, actor releases, call sheets, etc.) took longer to do than the actual film.

The rules were that it had to be 4 minutes or less, be a narrative story, and it had to be made with film school equipment.

We screened them in Mix A of the film school. Mix A is just like a real movie theater except one of the rows has a giant sound mixing board instead of actual seats. A ton of people showed up.

4th Weekend Project-Chase Scene

Oct 02, 2006 07:58AM

Classic Six-part structure of a chase sequence
-Anticipation (setup)
-Engagement
-First Pursuit
-Respite (break in the chase)
-Renewed Pursuit (upping the ante)
-Climax/resolution

In mine, a guy runs away from his girlfriend who wants to get married.

Third Weekend Project- Monologue

Oct 02, 2006 07:44AM

The assignment was to act out a monologue in our own film. They had a list of monologues we could choose from, and I picked the grave digger. I started experimenting with light for this project. I’ll post pictures of it soon.

First Weekend Project

Oct 02, 2006 07:29AM

Our first project was about composition. A character was supposed to lose something then find it in less than a minute and in a single shot. It also had to be in black and white. In mine, a girl loses her bookmark. I like two of the takes.

My First Day of Film School

Aug 30, 2006 05:46AM

Yesterday was my first day at the FSU film school. We had an editing class from 2:15-6:00. Our teacher went over the basics of Avid Composer. He told us that to a certain extent that we have to relearn what we know in editing because they have certain methods to keep everything organized.

Last week, there was an orientation meeting where we received general information and filled out paperwork. The film school also gave us schedules for this week. For my track it looks something like this:
Tuesday: 2:15-6:00 Edit Lab
Wednesday: 11:00-12:45 and 4:15-6:00 Writing 1
Thursday: 9:00-12:45 and 2:15-3:15 F1 Screening; 3:30-6:00 Film 1; 7:00-10:00 Film Genre
Friday: 9:00-10:45 Cam & Lite; 11:00-12:45 and 2:15-4:00 Prod Mgmt; 4:15-6:00 Cam & Lite
Saturday and Sunday: All Day F1 Exercise #1 (On location)

Sorry about the long absence. I have a new client (paying at that) and have been working. My website is getting revised and should contain more current information on the studio than the wab site. I am still trying to finish something for festival submission. Hope everything is going well for you.

Just a quick hello. I will be posting the latest in my area. 200 feet of 35mm is what, 1730-1750 frames, my memory being what it is these days. At 30fps that's something like a minute. In animation land that is a very long time. I hope you have fun learning to co-ordinate a crew.

Harlequin Apr 14, 2007 08:22AM

just stopped by to say "howdy"...good to see positive artistic busyness in the world.

Dear Carrie,

I apologize for the spam message, but I just recently finished a short of mine and was looking for feedback on it. If you have 30 minutes, please feel free to take a look at it:

Thank you,

I have placed the date of March 30, to be ready for final render. After that I will have transitioned from "giving up" to "moving on". The Alpha animatic is what amounts to a rough cut. It's done. Now I get to see how many of the details can be finished. Thanks for your interest.

Harlequin Feb 22, 2007 06:42AM

You can only learn by doing. Voted for your PSA.

Harlequin Feb 19, 2007 08:10AM

I just voted for your film...and I just like to write, I'd leave the shooting to someone else.

fcrabbath Jan 29, 2007 08:26AM

Hi Carrie, thanks to the add. You are very young and still very motivated, and from what I can see from the stills and your words you look pretty talented. I'm sure you'll make it.

Great that they just toss you in and let you do stuff...I always zoned in classes where professors droned on...don't know how people survive at behometh (sp?) state schools.

LonelyPond Sep 07, 2006 10:05PM

Enjoy film school. It certainly beats the "school of hard knocks".

Harlequin Sep 03, 2006 08:20AM

goodluck on your first day of film school!

Well, I've been putting my HTML into my "Blog Description" under the My Profile tab, but it works just as well in a Blog entry.

You're going to want to customize the height & width and background colors and things of that code I gave you, and there's some stuff in there to "hide" your friends and favorites that you might not want.

I'll post some more code later as I hack the site a little more. I really want to get the time to just write a template customization system, so you can modify your colors and things through a real feature instead of posting hacked HTML... but there are so many critical issues to fix that Site customizations aren't on there!

If you have a friend who's good with HTML/CSS they can help you fix it all up. Otherwise, I'll do it for you... for a fee!!! :)

Nice to meet you, congratulations and good luck with your festival, I look forward to reading some updates on how everything goes!

Sara Aug 18, 2006 04:54PM

You're our number 1 member! I had to write an algorithm to calculate most active people, based on number of posts, comments, friends, favorites, *everything*, and you came out on top by a looooooooong shot. Congratulations! And thanks for making Audience as super cool as I hope it will be some day.

Come to my site and steal my HTML to personalize your blog and then you'll be uber-elite.

Sara Aug 18, 2006 04:23PM

I see I have been added to CarrieHunter's circle. I have always enjoyed the plays at the Asolo put on by FSU's master classes. When should we expect to see you on stage? withoutabox has been reformated and is behaving very badly!

LonelyPond Aug 13, 2006 08:27PM

Thanks for visiting my audience page. Sounds like you've got a good festival up and running there, well done!

I'm thinking of doing something similar for young people here in good old blighty, I know where to come for advice!

polarghosts Aug 05, 2006 11:28AM

you're starting a youth film festival too?
that's awesome! the world needs more of them.
right now we're working on a business proposal that we'll use when approaching local theatres to see if they'd be willing to host the SNYFF screenings.
i'll definitely get back to you on the to-dos and no-to-dos once we've gained a little more momentum in making this thing come to life.
until then, take care!

Hi. Liked the website, especially the bold blue squiggle. Enjoyed the Global Solutions animation (although the sad frog also made me sad), but a very effective and affecting lesson. Makes me want to explore the possibilities of Flash animation.

Dstraus Jul 04, 2006 03:49AM

I was commenting on how long our web site was taking -- commiseration and all that. Great on the location and date. Hope you receive some fascinating entries. I'm curious myself as to how much and what form the subject will take on film. Best of luck.

LonelyPond Jul 01, 2006 11:02PM

Hi Carrie and thanks for being my friend. Good luck with the festival. Not my cup of tea though, as I am a large proponent of violence.
