NEXT SCREENING: Oakland Black International LGBT Film Festival
Jul 17, 2007 01:54AM
August 16 - 19th at the Parkway theater in Oakland. I am very excited that Flower Fokes has just been added to the lineup for this year's program. My movie, playing in my favorite theater - in my hometown. It doesn't get any better. Well, actually it does... I'll post more later!
SCREENING: 8th Annual Pikes Peak Lavender Film Festival
Jul 13, 2007 12:20AM
September 14, 15 & 16, 2007. I am very excited that Flower Fokes has been invited to open for the highly acclaimed film Red Without Blue. What an honor! And as I write this post, someone is sitting over my shoulder in the office I'm in, letting me know exactly how small the world I exist in is, and how I've been 6th degree connected to this film for some time now. What a delightful discovery...
SCREENING: QWOC Film Festival
Jun 04, 2007 12:08PM
Flower Fokes will show on June 9th in San Francisco as part of the 'Festival Focus: Queer Black Women's Films'. These are the filmmakers whom attended the class I did. I have been so busy with other things, including laying down the audio tracks for my next project - a serious work with a human cast, I have not had time to get excited. Brenda, whose film will also show on the ninth, and I sat down last night to go over which films we want to see at Frameline. She will go with me, and hold my hand, and ease my nervousness. The ride continues.
FINAL VERSION...
May 14, 2007 01:24AM
Phew! Never have I been so relieved! For the first time, I feel like the film is a completed project! I needed to redo the closing title sequence - which was a mess. Revisiting the film with a fresh eyes enabled me able to let go of some images and cuts I was holding on to. I have added a twist to the ending that I had originally wanted and I've shown it to a dozen or so friends, all of whom are wowed at the revisions. The final thing to do is post a new and better quality trailer, but as for the film Friends, finally - it's done... fin... put to bed. Ovah!
On to the next project...
Beli out.
Austin...
May 04, 2007 11:33AM
Just got back from the Austin Women's Film, Music, and Literary Festival. I had a great time, saw some fantastic films, and learned a mountain of things. It felt odd attending a festival for the first time as a participant, sitting amongst an audience of unknowns, who delighted me with laughter and even occasional applause during the film. I am now inspired to get on with my next project - a serious piece and a complete departure from FLOWER FOKES... I will even cast humans to play the parts - HAH! Thanks, congrats and kudos to P.O.W. - for doing her way! OH - and Austin is a fabulous town!
TRAILER PICKED UP...
Apr 17, 2007 01:26PM
Now, I ask the Universe - pick up the entire film please! ": )
I'm thrilled to know the search spiders on Google have picked me up, and the trailer has been placed on some pretty cool video sites. Thanks so much for this Friends and Viewers! You are making my Heart soar and keeping me inspired on the festival chase.
Brenda talked me into it...

There will be a sequel... FLOWER FOKES 2: Unplucked and Scary. LMAO! I'm planing to have it finisehd around Halloween; my birthday. Laughing hard as I hit the post button.
FLOWER FOKES WILL BE SHOWCASED AT FRAMELINE 2007
Apr 03, 2007 01:03AM
I got the email today... FLOWER FOKES will be part of the showcase at Frameline31!
Goodness... pinch me somebody!
SCREENING: Flower Fokes ... Accepted at Austin's Women's Film Music and Literary Festival
Mar 23, 2007 06:52PM
This was the first festival I eyed when my film was in post. The film will be seen at The Queer Women of Color Film Festival, held in San Francisco in June 2007, as well. I even got the trailer posted, although I'm not that thrilled with how it looks, since I posted in DivX format. Oh well... What a journey I find myself on!

Hello Friends,
I'm in the process of re-writing - for the umpteenth time the script for my next project. Hands Across Time will be a huge departure from Flower Fokes, but not to worry - the little gay flowers will DEFINITELY bloom again!
Happy New Year good people. May yours be peaceful, prosperous, and filled with all the things you dreamt about while sleeping.

Frameline31... Wow!
Jul 13, 2007 12:39AM
Attending Frameline as a 'filmmaker' as opposed to being an audience member was an extraordinary experience. We were treated so well, receiving respect, adulation, and admiration from festival goer and participants alike once they saw the green cord of the guest pass necklace we wore, signifying and seemingly elevating our worth, because we were filmmakers. It will be my most coveted piece of jewelry for some time to come. Things ran smooth as clockwork, the parties, and foods were fabulous. I made new friends and tons of wonderful and useful connections. Then came the big night… and I sat surrounded by friends, family and cast members - mortified. The film ran with no RGB color – just a blue and red splash, allowing very little dimension to the characters nor allowing the set and background artwork to come through. It was surreal to sit paralyzed, thinking that at any second, the green color input cord would be plugged in. But the minutes ticked by as the film ran on and the color never came correct. I endured flashbacks of all my hard work… not shining … at the biggest and most important film festival in the world. *sigh*
I have no doubt that some day, the events following the screening that night will end up as great back stories, but for now, I just grit my teeth, shake my head, or perhaps scratch it, and get ready for the next project. All in all, it was yet another painful growth spurt I’ve experienced as a first time filmmaker. Inspired by the closing night award ceremony for Andrea Sperling, I will pick myself up, put me back together, and go on to the next project.

Firefighters did not rescue me...
Apr 06, 2007 01:49PM
One night I was shooting, I had a bad reaction to some medication. I called 911. When the firefighters and paramedics arrived with their strong presence, as Brenda says, they looked around my house, saw about 30 flowers in various stages of dress; flowers with mustaches wearing womens' clothes, flowers with miniature scarfs and blouses... in hats. Now, this was in the dead middle of the night and I was shooting the nightclub scene. There was a miniature disco ball swinging and a sign reading; 'gay fokes bar' and gay flags set up around a miniature piano. They asked, 'So what did you take sweetheart... and what's going on in here... really?' I told them I was making a cartoon. Their demeanor went from helping me to 'just die'. LOL. I asked them to leave.
Title Graphics by: KIM MASON
Mar 20, 2007 06:28PM
One very cool thing in the film is the "FLOWER FOKES" logo and title graphics. I called my friend Kim to tell her I wanted to cast her in the role of Andy. She has a wonderfully innocent quality to her voice that I needed for Andy. While we talked, she asked about the title graphics. I told her since I was a one-woman show almost, I guess I'll tackle that too. DUH! Kim is a brilliant graphic artist. Everytime I see people smiling at the title - FLOWER FOKES - sliding across the screen, I thank goodness for her willingness to work in my frenzied enviornment. Thanks Mason! You still mad at me? Groovin' to Morrison
Mar 20, 2007 12:42PM
Yesterday, I dropped into Morris' - (the voice of Mike) studio and gave him an uber-cool hemp hat. He's on his way to Miami and man, was he stoked about the gift. And I must say, his fine ass was rockin' the hat!
WHERE IS THE CLIP??? My admin page says it's still loading. Be patient Friends!

Hi there, it's been a while since I've been on the site but I'm happy to see a greeting from you. Thanks for the good vibes. Good luck with your script. Keep at it. Would love to hear your tunes. Take care P

I love your smile! Thanks for keeping in touch. Things are going pretty well on my end. Sales on Amazon are encouraging. I wonder how anyone finds my film with the thousands of titles that are out there. I am going to post the first scene of Don't Talk So Dumb on You Tube and see if anything happens. I have all kinds of ideas for shorts but no one to do the technical stuff. As said before, marketing such a politically incorrect film is tough. I would hope that people would see that the bigoted main character is a bufoon but things are so sensitive these days that I guess that point is easily missed. Best of luck to you on your future endeavors!
Best,
George

Said I would stay in touch and, By God, I meant it. How goes it with your film? I really appreciate your having watched our trailer and sending me your nice note. I got an email from a group called Imoovie.com and they say they like my film very much and are going to promote it. We'll see. Thought you might like to check them out. If anything, they are extremely responsive which I really appreciate. Don't find that too often in the Indie world. Other than that, a few hits on Amazon and some really nice reviews which made me feel pretty good.
Catch up with me when you can.

Don't Talk So Dumb

You're welcome. I love it when I see other women filmmakers. When I was growing up I felt like I was the only one. All the other people that I knew that made movies were boys!
If any of your work ends up in Florida or Georgia, be sure to tell me because I'd like to see it!
Oh, and if you ever need an actor and/or crew (and if I don't have to be at school when you are shooting), I'm available. I have some pictures on my website along with my film resume.

I'm so excited, as this was the first one I eyed when the film was in post.
I just got off the phone with Chistie, and she said to me, 'Wow Beli, remember when you called me over to your house and said, look, I have these flowers and I'm gonna make a movie'.
Dreams do come true. Don't ever give up!

Sorry, I hit "post" by mistake before typing my message earlier. I've had a heck of a time uploading my trailer too. Actually, I'm not the technical one. I should say that our Director has had nothing but problems uploading. Still not accomplished. I love that you say that everything you have done has prepared you for the chaos of this medium. I feel the same way. I am only a screenplay writer who happened to meet an extremely talented Director so I'm not up on any of the technical stuff but it all starts with an idea. I hope you enjoy the WAB experience as I have. It's a very supportive crowd. Granted, we're all trying to promote our own films but I have met a lot of really great people on WAB and have learned a lot.
Best of luck to you!

Every art form I have ever engaged in over the past 20 years has prepared me to enter the world of filmmaking. Nothing I have ever done my whole in my whole life could have prepared me for the chaos of this medium. What an extraordinary process and exhilarating ride! I've always been told I had a wonderfully wild imagination. Well let me tell you something. Had I imagined just a little harder, never would I have attempted animation as a first film. But I did and people seem to be enjoying it, and that's how I ended up in this box. I'm looking forward to the next steps in the process, and when I figure out how to actually load a clip in here your feedback would be invaluable to me, so drop me a note if you would, and I will get back to you. Cheers everybody!
