Thoughts on The Bet Aug 27, 2007 01:38PM
Two men who live on opposite side of a hallway in a derelict building have a long-standing game of placing a wager on the fate of those unfortunate enough to cross their path. Their latest pawn is a young woman with a mysterious past.
Overall, this is a well paced, intelligent and genuinely disturbing film that trusts its audience to be capable of understanding – or interpreting - what is being shown without feeling the need to spoon-feed every plot point to the audience. As such it’s a film that improves with each viewing.
But what really sets The Bet apart is the atmosphere of grimy desperation that pervades the entire film – not just for the woman, but also for the two men. These are people who really have reached the end of the line and have no way out, as is powerfully underlined with the film’s closing scene.

The review of the week this week is for Delivery, which is a lot smarter than your average horror film. Writer/director Jose Zambrano Cassella has taken the time not only to tell a very solid story, but also to develop the protagonist into a real and sympathetic character. And it’s this characterisation that imbues the whole film with a genuinely dark atmosphere and a real sense of inevitable violence.

Traileriffic highlights for the week include Wild 7, a heist movie that can count Richard Roundtree among its cast members; Arid Lands, a documentary about land and people of the Columbia Basin in south-eastern Washington state where, 60years ago, the Hanford nuclear site produced plutonium for the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki.

We also have trailers for horror films such as Black Water, Hatchet, the brutal looking Senseless and The Devil’s Chair.

The big news this week is that we have a stack of stills for the upcoming film, The Moonlight Murders, an interesting sounding film noir style horror thriller based on the old Texarkana moonlight phantom murders case from the 1940’s. Click here to check them out.

And finally, if you live in South Africa, Enjoy Emmanuelle while you can.
Greetings from Pulpmovies Jul 17, 2007 01:23PM
Since I signed up, I really haven't been very active on here so far. So - in the tradition of every major franchise so far - this post represents a reboot. Let's see what happens... You can also find me on Flixster and the ubiquitous MySpace The most important part of this post, however, is that I also run the Pulpmovies.com website - an independent website for lovers of independent film. Come on over and say hello.

Stunningly shot and strongly acted, Now You See Me, Now You Don’t is a genuinely moving ghost story and one of the most memorable films I’ve seen all year.
