This picture was taken last year on a trip I went with my wife and my son to Brazil. It was an amazing trip and so relaxing. It was really the first vacation I took since my partner and I founded Withoutabox in January of 2000.

Film Maker's Blog
The Power of Self-Distribution
May 18, 2006 01:03PM
If you've heard me speak recently on a panel, you know that power is a word I often use. After all, nothing's more empowering than actually making a film--as a director, every decisions is in your hands. So why give up that power when you enter the marketing and distribution process?
Remember what it felt like before you made your first film? You probably did what most first-time filmmakers do--you asked for permission. You asked if you could make the film, get financing for your film. . .then one day you realized that the only way you could make your film was to just choose to make it, and stop asking for permission at every step of the way. At that moment, you went from "pre-filmmaker" to director! Or producer!
Until now, most filmmakers, once their film is made, seemingly forget about the power and the passion they have inside themselves, and they once again begin to ask permission to market and distribute the film. How familiar do these words sound: "Will you buy my film?" "Will you market my film?" Will you help me distribute my film, please?"
Our philosophy at Withoutabox is that you know your film and you can find your market, and that what you need is ACCESS and SUPPORT --even if you're one of the lucky few that get "picked up" by traditional distributors, the tools we are creating will help you work with those distribution companies, or on your own to self distribute. So we're creating all of the tools you need to completely self distribute your art work, and in doing so, be able to make a living doing what you love doing.
Audience by Withoutabox, the marketing platform whose technology powers this blog, is a very important tool in your distribution campaign. The International Film Festival Submission System, which we introduced in 2000, was the very first tool Withoutabox created to empower you to manage and market your film--and is now used by over 90,000 filmmakers around the world. We still believe the festivals are the best FIRST place to go in order to begin to gain exposure for your film, but they are only the first step in a very long and what can be quite a rewarding process.
In the weeks and months to come, you're going to see more and more products at Withoutabox designed with you in mind.
Some of them are:
DVD Duplication/Replication and Fulfilment
Shopping carts for you to use to sell your film on Withoutabox or on your OWN web site
One of our most exciting new products is Critical Mass Ticketing (CMT). This revolutionary system will allow you to set up screenings and market your film in theatres, alternative exhibition houses, like your own living room, or a friends office or a museum. As you know, we're also setting up a national network of CineCommandos, other Withouatbox members who are helping to create screening opportunities for independent filmmakers and film.
The first step in this process is to bring your audience together to one place so that you can communicate with them directly. That's what AUDIENCE by Withoutabox is all about. I am sure you know at least 10 people who have seen your film already. These are your "first tier" of supporters--friends, family, colleagues. Invite them to join you here on Audience, and have them rate your film and leave you a note. Ask them to be part of this conversation with you. Have them join the movement today!
Don't imagine that the way things are done tomorrow are the way they were done yesterday. Dare to dream and know that you are in the middle of a unique time, in the middle of a movement that YOU control—one that, at the end of the day, will change the way audiences around the world have access to entertainment.
We'll continue talking about this, and of course, if you have any questions, just come here to ask them, I check this blog frequently, and look forward to continuing this discussion with you directly -- and sharing your success stories right here!
Best
David

1600 days since we first Opened our doors in Beta to Filmmakers...
Jan 20, 2006 11:06PM
We've come a long way - and we still have a ton planned for the indie film community. It's been 1600 days exactly since we first launched the Festival Submission System. Since then we've worked with thousands of filmmakers from 200 countries around the world.. over 75,000 filmmakers actually. Our goal is to be your advocate and continue to build systems that put you in the center of the Independent Network. We've got a lot more in store ... It's now 11:02 PM on January 20th and hours ago we launched the beta version of our Audience site to help you connect directly with your audience and form a lasting relationship with them. Our team is already in Park City enjoying the festivities and I leave tomorrow.

Hi David!
We've manged to submit the "La Victime 1" at the Beverly Hills Fine Arts Industry Showcase and the movie is in consideration. We're not quiet sure with the tehcnic, sound, row actors and lights being the problems, but we're confident to our story that it's the first Congolosese indie. We're waitting on the 28th for the result from the Festival. At least, we've tried our best to reach there. We're are still carring with the "Le Nouveau Patron". We must have less problems as we're getting more experience in the Post Production. Thanks to Dstrauss and Jacques for the words of encouragments on the blogs.
It made us to look forward and forget our past failures.
Regards,

David, I haven't been able to post a blog or upload pictures for the last two days. I contacted support but all they did was give me set up instructions for audience. It keeps saying that I didn't choose a file or I didn't write any text when I tried to submit. What can I do? I’m using Safari.

We'd love to chat about ways to better our project. Let us know how to contact you.

David,
Our company, The Empowerment Project, is in the process of setting up our page on Audience. I was searching around on your page and noticed your coming updates; of particular interest is the Critical Mass Ticketing. We just finished and our in the process of marketing a new film, and the CMT seems to be just the ticket (pardon the pun) to getting some publicity. Perhaps you could share a little more with us about that, in particular when it will be available, etc. Check out our site as well, although it still is in the beginning stages. Any tips you could give would be most appreciated. Thanks.
Best,
I. M.

David,
I was able to upload a trailer.
You can check it out on my personal page!
Thanks Again!
Jun 14, 2006 11:13AM
David,
A big THANK YOU!
"audience" is getting a lot of hits...
When you google my name, the
film page is the first entry to come
up after my "audience" personal
page.
When you google "VISUAL FUTURIST",
the film page is the second entry
to come up.
When you google "SYD MEAD", the
film page comes up on the 4th page.
That is a big deal!
Thanks Again!
Now, ...if we can just get that trailer up!

hey David,
having a blast coming up with new ways to get out there...just did a webcast last Sat and recorded my DVD director's commentary last Sun...might be part of a WB reality show featuring women feature directors, very exciting...also screening DOAS next at Broad Humor Film Festival in Venice, CA at end of June.
What did you and Fred think of the show?
Hope all's well,
Donna

Andrew, Thanks for your note, and using Withoutabox for all these years. The core of your suggestion is something we will absoluting be able to do in a number of different ways. We are currently in the process of a redesign for Audience and the site in general. That process takes a little time, but I will be sure that we are able to both create "featured" sections that allow for Features to stand out independently of shorts, which will have its own section as well. Our goal is to create the tools and systems for all films, whether or not it's a 10 second film or an 120 min film, and yes we agree each film needs to be treated differently.
Jun 02, 2006 08:12AM
Hi David-- looking forward to seeing how this place develops. Thanks for being out there on the cutting edge! I remember way way back when you first opened withoutabox and were drumming up filmmakers to join. I loved the idea then, and still hope to really utilize it a lot in the future. Also had the pleasure of hearing you on the panel at the '04 Newport Beach FF, where I was in feature competition. It's all very exciting :)
P.S. The thought popped into my head about the difference between features and shorts. It's really easy for an all-access site like this to get overwhelmed with content, and it seems that features are mostly the ones that need the help drumming up self-distribution, as the distribution model for shorts is a very different model & much smaller stakes. Is there any way to make a page for an independent feature film (like Puffy Chair--which I like seeing promoted on the homepage) stand out above the mass of shorts this site will be cataloging?
May 29, 2006 02:28PM
David. Please excuse my typo in the previous message. Have a great weekend!
May 29, 2006 02:23PM
Dennis. Let me know when you want to have that phone conversation. It's Monday at 2, but I think we both failed to realize it is Memorial weekend. I look forward to the chat!

If we need to start a film festival in Congo. We need just to hire venues and to arrange with popular musicians who can attrack people and entries for trillers and love stories doubbled in French. We need also to hire a local TV for advertisement.
May 29, 2006 02:57AM
Dstraus !
There is any indie filmaker in Congo at this time. I'm quite the first one to try. But, there are some venues in the Capital City Kinshasa, like "Vévé Centre" and other where we can sreen our movies. We can build big tents in a stadium, it can work. I'm re-editiong "La Victime 1", because in Congo, they want at leat 60 min. movies, and in French. You support if the condition to succeed. Entertainement is big in Congo, but no industry for that. I'll send the original copy to you very soon.
Thank you.
May 26, 2006 07:06PM
Excellent...lookin' forward to it. It will make an already
amazing tool even better!
May 26, 2006 04:25PM
Joaquin, Thanks for your note. Eventually our filmmakers will be able to take this platform with them and use it on their own website. Details are still being worked out - but to see an example of it look at Tiffany's web site www.tribethefilm.com and click on Shared Thoughts.
May 26, 2006 01:03PM
David,
THANKS for starting "audience"! I have had 2 domain names for
quite some time now...but "TIME" being what it is, and more
importantly, "MONEY" being how it is...I just have not been
able to get anything started on the net.
Alas, now "audience" has done everything for me.
Now, let's get some films sold!

I am currently working on my first film and was told about WAB by a fellow filmmaker. I am looking forward to really utalizing this site. By the way, I am about the only person left on earth who does not use MYSPACE. Thank you.
May 20, 2006 09:19PM
SIRTONY,
I will check out Live Digital - and appreciate all your comments. In terms of a place where you can have your product and allow certain organizations veiw it.. this is something which will come in the future.... we will be offering a way for festivals to search our database but only with the permission of the filmmaker. If they find a film they are interested in, then they can invite that film to participate. At first, we will offer Industry Screeners on DVD to be sent to the festival if they request one. Again, only with the permission of the filmmaker. This type of product would also be available for online content.
May 19, 2006 02:47PM
Thanks...for the feedback and the direction of what to do...no I have'nt organized all the films or the blogs but will do...i am very interested in the LINKs for my web site etc...LINKING everything is great...Look forward to yo updates...and thank s again...it's great what's happening...and the self distribution should be very exciting...see if yo can set up an E MAIL system like on LIVEDIGITAL.COM there you can Email anyone the work and they can just click and play...plus you can CUSTOMIZE albums of films they can click on...check it out...I know you will understand once you play around with it...all the best...also...I was hoping you would have a page we could PAY for that Festivals can VIEW our films here...IMAGINE you control the Product for us ...and they order what films thay want ...wepay you not them...they can share the fee ...however ...but the film makers don't pay for festivals they are not in...I know the festivals will not be thrilled BUt...i'm sure ther is a way to do
May 19, 2006 08:11AM
Tinavidy, How many indie filmmakers are there in the Congo RDC, Africa near you? What are the venues you might be able to screen your film? Let's think through some things together and see what the solutions are. We will also be offering DVD on demand duplication, what I would suggest you do is send us your original once we officially open that system and try to sell it to an audience outside of the congo. We realize because of your location in Africa it may be more difficult or take longer, but doesn't mean that it won't happen, so, just know you have support over here. -D
May 19, 2006 04:22AM
Thanks Dstraus for you choice! I'm really from a very differnt world, Congo RDC and Africa. So. It is hard to be thinker and filmaker here. Horrible to see all your efforts getting noe where. I've trid to market my movie ' La victime 1" in DRC. People need to see on TV first and I must pay the TV programme for the show. Therefore, I cannot sell the DVD out there. Image. I've so many projects waiting.

The power to do without being told and the passion to accomplish the end result for something that sears your soul equals results.
Dare to dare.
Dare to do.
Dare to be ...different and try something new!
The hardest part of creating your own world is the willingness to jump, knowing if you fall, at least you tried and you don't have to worry about the dreaded, "what-if", "'coulda", "'shoulda", "'woulda".
Just be ... and delight in the feeling and doing and being in the dreaming of the the impossible and actually achieving what some folks only dare to write on paper or whisper out loud.
We all make mistakes. That's what gives us texture. That's how we learn what works, what's right, and what one wants to be apart of in the now.
May 18, 2006 01:07PM
SIRTONY, YES - very exciting time indeed.

Okay...it's all finally coming together ...I waited three years to have SITES to upload short custom original films...for me it was to SHOWCASE my Actors 24/7
