Synopsis
From silent film star Sessue Hayakawa to Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle, the Slanted Screen examines portrayals of Asian men in film and television, and how a new generation of filmmakers are re-defining these age-old stereotypes. A 60-minute film --- written, directed and produced by Jeff Adachi --- the Slanted Screen includes interviews with veteran actors Mako (Academy Award nominee, 'The Sand Pebble'), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa ('Memoirs of a Geisha'), James Shigeta ('Crimson Kimono' 'Flower Drum Song'), Dustin Nguyen ('21 Jumpstreet' 'VIP'), Phillip Rhee ('Best of the Best'), Jason Scott Lee ('Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story), Tzi Ma ('Ladykillers' 'Rush Hour'), as well as newer actors Bobby Lee ('MAD TV') and Will Yun Lee ('Die Another Day' 'Torque') producer Terence Chang ('Mission Impossible II' 'Anna and the King'),casting director Heidi Levitt and directors Eric Byler ('Charlotte Sometimes') and Gene Cajayon ('the Debut'). Media experts Dr. Darrell Hamamoto and Lois Salisbury provide their insights. The film contains over 50 film clips of depictions of Asian American male characters from Hollywood films spanning almost a century. In addition to Sessue Hayakawa, who starred in over 90 films from 1913-1966, the film also discusses martial arts star Bruce Lee, James Shigeta and early yellow-face portrayals. The Slanted Screen takes a critical look at the power of the media and what needs to happen to improve the roles available to Asian men working in film and television.

Hi Jeff, saw your film at the Asian American Journalist Assn conference in Honolulu. My film partner and I showed ours too, AN UNTOLD TRIUMPH. You weren't there, but I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your doc! I hope you will check out my new doc, STRANGE LAND: MY MOTHER'S WAR BRIDE STORY. I've just begun entering it; it has its world premiere at the Hawaii Intl Film Fest in October. A real crowd pleaser, it was shown to a sell-out crowed.
Question: did you get waivers for your entree fees, you entered a lot of festivals! Which would you recommend from your experience for my new film? Hope you will check out my blog. thanks! And more good luck to you! Stephanie

My film, "No Menus Please," had the honor of opening for "The Slanted Screen" special screening at the Calgary International Film Festival. I didn't attend the festival but the premise of this film is very important, as is significant. I wish the best for "The Slanted Screen" and it's creator, Jeff Adachi.
