Film Description:

Synopsis

Born in Melilla inside a military family, he had to behave as a daughter to make up for being an only son, the artist jokes. She talks about her childhood, her parents, her grandparents, how did her family accept her lifestyle in a prejudiced society (and even more, in a military-based tradition family) She talks about her playgrounds, the relationship with her posse, soccer, dolls... how she enjoyed dressing as a woman, her dreams... At 17, she decides to leave home and starts performing on stages as a transvestite. She started performing during Franco’s dictatorship, when censorship only allowed transvestite shows with trousers under the dress, to justify that the performance was a grotesque joke, or else you could be put under arrest. Despite that, Sandra was arrested, since the authorities considered that acting dressed as a woman was not a job. When she had to make the military service, lasting for almost a month, Sandra tells that she wore the cap Garbo style. Even though her superiors made her to wear it correctly, she constantly tilted it to the side. She had to stand all kinds of repression and scorn. She talks about her arrival to Madrid and her very first performances in the city. She also narrates how she lived the political changes after Franco’s death and after the Movida. The documentary, structured as a cabaret, inserts some of Sandra’s performances, showing her relationship with the audience, her jokes, her songs...

Really interesting, it shows a different side of Spain. The film treats with respect and in a way that it's not the habitual one, the topic of the transsexual reality in the last 30 years, and from the point of view of several people. I really enjoy it!

Once seen the doc, the disjunctive has no longer sense: Sandra has always been Sandra, a courageous woman who has been brave enough to show who she is. The film is a spotlight on the normal life of a extraordinary woman, it shows us the painful experiences a travesti may suffer, but also all the warm and affection she has deserved thanks to her charm and humanity. It's worth seeing the doc.

I loved its sensitiveness to deal with matters still labeled as taboo by our society. The film portrays how difficult is for most transvestites to go through the society's rejection towards them. Sandra is really charming, and her struggle must be exemplary for most of us.
