Synopsis
Television production is continually pushing the boundaries of what is considered acceptable viewing content. As a society we have been conditioned to expect a variety of new entertainment, whether that is through art, theatre, film, video – games or television we all have the desire to experience something new. In the rapid growth of the television platform spanning multiple outlets and hundreds of channels, network producers are always looking for the next best thing. Competitive strategies across the media is nothing new, companies have always sounded out the competitors to give their product the creative edge. In today’s society we expect more from television content. In a constant battle to bring the audience something ‘new’ television networks are having to look beyond the set boundaries and by breaking them not only are they putting people at danger they are opening a can of worms which could lead to destruction and desolation. CUT is an experimental short film incorporating a mix of drama and horror. Its intention is to make the audience think about how much power television executives really have and what they are capable of in the near future. CUT opens in an operating theatre graphically showing the procedures of open-heart surgery. Everything seems legitimate, until we realize that the patient is awake during the operation. Later it is revealed that the procedure is being broadcast live on television and that the network executives may not have been playing by the rules.

Cut is an interesting concept of reality TV for the future, just how far will people go for their 15 minutes of fame also the ethics behind these shows can you trust the TV companies to act in your best interest or their own. The film is thought provoking

I rarely like to be questioned. Often I cannot articulate a strong enough argument for anything and are left running conversations over and over in my head, thinking I should have said this or I should have said that. Unfortunately, "Cut" has presented me with a dilemma and made rethink my ideas about the evolution of television and whether TV companies are serving my interests or their own. This film has made me realise that I need to articulate an argument and not remain in a desensitised silence.
