Synopsis
In June 2005, I moved from Paris to New York to be my with on-again off-again boyfriend. Four days after we reunited, he broke up with me. I never understood his reasoning. I moved to London, he stayed in New York. I wondered if he thought about me or regretted his decision. Then, one day in December, he emailed me after months of silence and told me that he missed me. He was sorry about the way things had ended, he wrote, and wished I was in his life again. Thus began my documentation of coping with a break up. I started recording all our interactions. I was going to New York for the winter holidays, and we agreed we would see each other. However, once I arrived, he avoided me. I left him a dozen messages without him calling me back. When he finally did, he told me he had a girlfriend. The End of an Affair is about the absurdity of love and relationships. In this documentary, a filmmaker uses the presence of a camera to obtain closure on a break-up she can’t come to terms with, and to understand why her relationship failed. Part video diary, part performance, this is a documentary that blurs the line between fact and fiction in order to reveal the universality of having loved and lost. While it remains unclear what is real and what is constructed, it is a common story of love and obsession, which sometimes, are also indistinguishable.
