Synopsis
Wisdom Teeth is an experimental short that pays homage to the aesthetic and angst of early German Expressionist cinema. Shot on super8 and hi contrast 16mm, the grain, darkness and occasional overexposure help to examine the nervous patient's psyche before and during a bizarre oral surgery procedure. Fast imprints of butterfly wings, etc, fly up, down and across the screen in a Brakhage-like frenzy. This is what a celluloid mind looks like during lepidoptric oral extraction. The basic principles of cinematography and more complex effects achieved through optical printing are greatly similar to psychotic and anesthetic effects on the human eye. The lens is an eye and film stock is the section of the brain in which images are etched into. Some amounts of light are far too great for the eye to handle, overexposing reality. The opposite of this, underexposure, is also true. However, cinema is also capable of superimposition, freezing or reversal of time, repetition, close ups and other things comparable only to dreamlike states. Social critic Walter Benjamin once suggested that important mental images develop further afterwards, similar to the photographic process. While this is true, certain other images come about only in the fantastic state of an anxious mind. Wisdom Teeth shows potential images of reality, but also ones existent only in the angst written psyche.

Of the 9 festivals it was submitted to, The Winnipeg International Film Festival '05 was the only taker. It played to a small, yet receptive crowd, and throughout the festival I encountered many chivilrous and encouraging filmmakers and appreciators.
Other than Winnipeg, "WT" screened at Hampshire College (May '04(Amherst, MA, USA)), as that is where I put it all together. It recieved a standing ovation from a room of 80 people or so, but that doesn't really count-- the Hampshire College community is far too nice.
Since then the only other "screenings" have been conducted at random for curious and unsuspecting students at Roger Williams University (Bristol, RI, USA). If they ask to see it I place them in a small dark room in the basement of the university library, put a VHS copy in, the volume at full blast, and lock the door. Reactions have varied.

Thanks for sending me a copy! Truly some horrifying imagery in there. In fact, I haven't been to the dentist since! I don't usually make such a connection with experimental pieces like this, but I really enjoyed it. Now that you have the means, I'd love a DVD copy as well, since I don't have a VHS player anymore and I'd like to show this to my associates. I'll send you The Nightingale Princess in exchange, just shoot me a note with your address.

Hey there, I don't know if you remember me (Dan Gilbert) since you graduated two years before I did. Maybe you do, maybe you don't. Either way, I'd love to see your Div III--any chance you could send me a copy? loglow@gmail.com

Yes, I must of course give the 'safety' 4 stars- but god damn it is this a five star piece of cinema. Rhode Island horror meets psychodrama dentist patient fantasies.
