Synopsis
Three and a half million commuters use the New York City Subway every day. The subterranean labyrinth of screeching trains and steel dust is also the workplace of hundreds of often overlooked, occasionally talented, but always entertaining street performers. DOWNTOWN LOCALS is a funny yet poignant glimpse underground, into the lives of six disparate modern-day subway buskers. The unique cast of characters includes the Mercury Man, a struggling actor whose complex act involves standing motionless for hours at a time; Julio, a Colombian immigrant who dances with a life sized doll attached to his shoes; and Helen, a former Vassar graduate who in her forties reinvents herself as an accordion-playing chanteuse. Each artist weathers a year marked with personal successes and defeats, always remaining true to their art and steadfast in their right to perform despite struggles with the police, city bureaucracy, money, complex pasts, addiction, and loneliness. DOWNTOWN LOCALS brilliantly illustrates the microcosm of the true underground by drawing us into the lives of a few of New York City’s less celebrated characters. Their stories will leave you hopeful, haunted, and wondering where they are now.

Ratings
Downtown Locals haunted me so thoroughly that I wished the players were fictitious...so I wouldn't have to care about them.
A fascinating window into the lives of these people. This movie is the very meaning of "Underground"
My rating should read as 5 stars but due to user interface error, the rating is incorrect. "If you don't suceed at first, try, try again"...
