Selma’s a middle-aged and overweight woman dwelling in the sunny suburbs of LA. Despite her feeble attempts to remind him, Selma’s husband Bill barely registers her existence. Theirs is a marriage that has become routine in its lack of connection. Selma’s only solace is food. When her friend Lettie suggests a swim class to try to get in shape, Selma reluctantly agrees, not expecting it to be any different from the other futile attempts she’s made to shed the weight. But when Selma goes underwater for the first time, a feeling of freedom washes over her that she’s never experienced before. The water renders her weight meaningless. She excels in her swim class, and for a while she feels accepted and free. But, it’s not long before Selma transfers her compulsion for food to the water. Months later, Selma has transformed herself into the skinny person she always longed to be. But, she feels the same inside. So, she immerses herself further and further into the water, the only place where she feels at home. And she never wants to come up for air.
